A "liberal" columnist look at Bush; or drools, whatever (Updated)

While I was reading this Digby post, Frothy Junior (guest-posting at FireDogLake 06/20/06), I thought some of it might be good to quote in a comment to Tanker's "Mean and Skinny Gurls" post here at The Blue Voice.

But it's such a perceptive and funny takedown of columnist Joe Klein, who is Time magazine's resident "liberal" columnist, but who would certainly count as one of that group the Daily Howler calls "FOX liberals".

There are two basic variants. One is the Alan Colmes type, who weakly defends liberal positions in the face of the assertive Sean Hannity. The other is the "I'm a liberal, but..." kind. The "..." in that sentence is then filled with either a recital of the Republican Party line on a particular issue, or chanting the Republican script about how sad and bad the Democrats are. You know, kind of like Joe Lieberman every time he opens his mouth on camera these days.

Digby's post is really an entertaining read. Check it out. As a sample, on the standard script of our "press corps" about our Dear Leader, she writes:

It's the image of Bush as some sort of cowboy hero that kept him propped up for so long (if you’ll excuse the expression) and which the press corps has been dying to get another lingering look at. They love their man when he's all sweaty and swaggering. Preferably in a tight jumpsuit.
[Additional note: In order not to take the name of Bob "the Daily Howler" Somerby in vain, I should note that he objects to the ridicule of Joe Klein over this. I think he may be trying to hard to be contrarian on this one. In my case, I wouldn't criticize Klein for never saying anything liberals would agree with - he does say "liberal" things - but rather for pimping destructive and misleading "press corps" scripts about the larger context of the partisan conflicts.]

No subject for immortal verse
That we who lived by honest dreams
Defend the bad against the worse."
